I used to spend 10 hours a week reviewing sales and trying to find out where they came from.
I was managing over $2 Million a year in Facebook Ad Spend, and two different highly profitable email lists.
Eventually, I hired a VA and taught him how to track everything.
Now, why did I spend so much of my time tracking sales?
Because I needed to know what ads, emails, sales funnels, etc. were working, and which were failing.
That way I could invest more of our marketing budget into what was working – which would increase sales.
And, it worked. I doubled sales for a multi-million dollar company in less than 6 months.
Here’s what I learned during this process.
#1. There’s no magic software that will accurately track all your sales for you.
I’ve tried them all out and they didn’t work. I sure wish there was, but I didn’t find it.
#2. UTMs are helpful but don’t show you everything.
In my experience, less than 50% of UTM data actually makes it to the Shopping Cart. And, since UTM Tracking is free, you might as well set it up for all your ads and emails.
#3. The easiest way to track sales is to silo each Traffic Source / Sales Funnel / Offer Combination into its own separate little order form.
It’s pretty easy to do this in Clickfunnels. This is my number one tracking tip, and it has made tracking so much easier. In addition, I can feel more confident that I’m not getting false data.
#4. Avoid promoting the same Sales Funnel to your email list on the same day or two days in a row.
If you stagger it out, then you can feel more confident that the email sales came from one specific email, instead of having to guess.
Tracking is always going to be a challenge. But, at least with online marketing, we have an idea of what’s working.
Just imagine being the CEO of Home Depot 20 years ago when everything was offline. They had no idea if their marketing was working or not. Thank God we have the tracking capabilities we have today!
